Early History[]

Souris was founded by Acadians in 1727 as a fishing settlement at the mouth of the Souris River, though there is evidence that the name may have been given as early as 1724, when there was a large, Island wide plague of mice and thus the name 'Souris', which is French for mouse fell into common useage[1].

Later names, such as Colville Bay and Red Cliff did not stick[1]. By 1810 the name Souris was well established, and inhabitants from St. Peter's arrived somewhere around this time. Acadian settlers from Arichat, Cape Breton, as well as a family of McPhee's also settled around 1810.
